November 12 - 15
This week's emphasis was on the Persian Wars...You should have read and taken notes on the Persian Wars and the growth of Athens through the Delian League.  The ultimate destruction came with the civil conflict known as the Peloponnesian War.  The war weakened the Greek Poleis and set the stage for a takeover from the north.

What led to the strengthening of Macedonia?
How did Philip prepare his son to be the ultimate successor?
Do you think that Alexander would have made a great ruler as well as conqueror?  Why?
Be sure to be able to compare and contrast the Hellenistic era of Alexander with the Hellenic era of Classical Greece.

Describe how trade helped to spread influence of Greek Culture.
What role did the Olympics play in Ancient Greece?
Describe the typical Greek society and family.

Greek Philosophy...Research Greek Philosophers.

Nov. 18 - Today we are going to look closely at the ideas of some of the Greek Philosophers.  The Greeks had varying ideas on how the world and the human mind worked.  They spent many years studying these ideas.  We are going to focus on Pythagoras, Zeno (Stoicism), Epicurus, Sophists, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.  Each group will be assigned one of these philosophers and must create an informative power point to explain the ideas.  Each power point should be 6 slides (not including title slide).  You may include pictures but they should be explained and add to the understanding.  Remember that people don't use power point to write a long report...keep to the facts.  Also, YOU must be able to explain the slides in your own words...plagiarism and "copy/paste" will result in a zero on the assignment.  Have fun and make us "think"...

Finally, your homework assignment.  Due Tuesday.
Find a minimum of 5 ways that Greek influence in present in the modern world.  Be specific on the Greek influence and its modern counterpart.  Describe and illustrate each item.

Next week:  We begin to study the Romans.  You should start reading Chapter 11 (pg. 210 - 229)
There will be a test on Religions, India, China, and Greece on Thursday.

Don't forget to work on your articles.  You should have 4 articles by now.

Quarter Project

Quarter project:
Choose a theme...
1. Migration or movement of people, refugees
2. Ethnic or Religious conflict
3. Environmental issues
4. Medical or Health issues
5. Human Rights
6. Communications technology

Collect one article a week that corresponds to the theme.  These should be contemporary to today and you should be able to relate them to the theme of your choice.  USE ONLY ONE THEME for this project.  Be sure to analyze each article. You may use the "Historical Reading Skills Chart" from the Stanford website to help in the analysis.  Each article should be saved along with the analysis.  Create a folder/booklet to keep the articles and their analysis.  At the end of the quarter you will examine the articles and look for a pattern or theme.  Predict the direction things are going in the future.
