How did India grow economically?  Describe growth of towns and especially trade.
Describe family life and the importance of Hinduism.

Describe Jainism and its role in India's search for "salvation".
What is the basis behind "Buddhism"?
Describe the teachings, beliefs, and practices of Buddhism.

Analyze the leadership of Ashoka and his role in the growth of Buddhism.
Finally, explain why Buddhism gained popularity in other areas of Asia but was eventually displaced by a popular Hinduism in India.

To be completed at home.
In text book:  You should have read Chapter 8 and taken notes.
How did Daoism, Legalism, and Confucianism impact China's search for political and social order?
Find one quote or document for each of these and explain its importance for China.  Describe how the document illustrates or best represents the philosophy.
Characterize the Han and Qin dynasties.  Who were the rulers that had a large influence?  Why?
How did they lead to unification of China? 
How did they combine Legalism and Confucianism to provide order and organization?
What brought about the end of the Han dynasty?

Collect a minimum of 20 words, phrases, people and/places to add to your vocabulary cards.
Examples:  filial piety, Confucius, Qin Shihuangdi, terra-cotta soldiers, Sima Qian...etc...

Create a chart to compare the ideas listed.
Prepare for a Socratic Seminar:  "Would America be better off if it lived according the teachings of Confucius?"

Research and analyze the religions and philosophies of Asia.
Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confusianism

What are the sacred writings?
Important terms?
Is there a heaven and/or hell?
What is the foundation of the beliefs?
Do they have a specific deity or many deities?
Who founded the religion?

Which do you think would be most acceptable in the Western world?  Why?

Create 5 higher level questions and research the answers.

Complete the graphic organizer to compare the religions.

Begin Flash Cards

Create a list of 25 words (people, places, ideas, general vocabulary) from Part 1 to be put onto flash cards.  Each card should contain:  1) the word and definition, 2) an illustration, symbol, map, etc., 3) an example of the term and how it applies to Part 1.

Crash Course World History: Greeks and Persians

Zoroastrianism

Comparing religions in ancient world.

Begin research of the religions of the Classical World.
Start with a comparison of Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism
Create a graphic organizer to show similarities and differences.

You may use the following website to gather more information.

After creating the organizer and collecting information, write a summary on the comparison.
Find three documents that illustrate ( in words or stories) each of the belief systems.  Incorporate the documents into your summary and answer the following question:  "How did the classical religions emerge, spread, and define the roles of people?




Next we will compare Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Confucianism.


October 18 to 24.

Beginning study of Part 2...The formation of Classical Societies

Topics will include:  Persia, China, India, Greece, Rome, Culture exchange on the Silk Road

Themes and topics of study in class will include:  Major belief systems, consequences (both intentional and unintentional) of movement along trade routes, cultural traditions of the classical societies, and the importance of social structure as well as conflicts between classes.

You should be reading and taking notes on pages 128 - 253

Quarter project:
Choose a theme...
1. Migration or movement of people, refugees
2. Ethnic or Religious conflict
3. Environmental issues
4. Medical or Health issues
5. Human Rights
6. Communications technology

Collect one article a week that corresponds to the theme.  These should be contemporary to today and you should be able to relate them to the theme of your choice.  USE ONLY ONE THEME for this project.  Be sure to analyze each article. Each article should be saved along with the analysis.  Create a folder/booklet to keep the articles and their analysis.  At the end of the quarter you will examine the articles and look for a pattern or theme.  Predict the direction things are going in the future.

As of October 16th...we have completed Part 1.  You should have a passable knowledge of the influences of geography and the effects of technology on early man.  You should be able to describe the chronological and relationship changes that man went through from prehistory to 600 C.E.

Your major grades and projects for part 1 were:  1) chart of early civilizations (5 of them)
2) Children's book project,  3) test on Part 1.

We are now ready to venture into Part 2...
